EXPEC ARC Technologist Honored
DHAHRAN, August 12, 2009 -- Panos Kelamis, chief technologist of the EXPEC Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC) Geophysics Technology Team, has been honored by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) with the prestigious Society’s Life Membership Award.
The SEG Executive Committee unanimously selected Kelamis to receive the recognition for exceptional service to the society and for his contributions to the science and profession of geophysics.
"Dr. Kelamis is being recognized for marvelous technical achievements and remarkably commendable service to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, for which he deserves this prestigious recognition. We are quite proud of him," said Samer S. AlAshgar, acting manager of EXPEC ARC
"This award is not only a reflection on me,” Kelamis said, “it is a demonstration of the strong support that Saudi Aramco provides to its employees, to not only grow and advance in their field but also to assume a leadership role in the international scientific arena."
The gas-oil separation plant has compressors capable of transporting gas the 300-km distance to Haradh Gas Plant
Kelamis will receive the award during SEG’s 2009 Annual Meeting in Houston the week of Oct. 25.
Kelamis is a widely known expert in his field, and has published and presented more than 100 technical papers in international journals and conferences.
His paper on radon-based multiple elimination technology earned him honorable mention at the 1990 SEG Conference. His 1999 SEG Conference paper presented the first field case-study application of CFP-based redatuming technology for near-surface characterization, which also won an honorable mention.
In 2000, his "Geophysics" paper was the first publication on the application of wave-equation-based multiple elimination technology for land seismic data. For his research in multiple elimination technology, Kelamis was honored as the SEG 75th Anniversary Distinguished Lecturer in 2005. He presented his lecture in more than 30 locations worldwide. In 2006-2007 he was elected SEG vice president.
Kelamis has served on the editorial boards of Geophysics, the Journal of Geophysics and Engineering, the Chinese Journal of Applied Geophysics and the Journal of Seismic Exploration. He also is a member of the advisory board of the Delphi University Research Consortium at TU Delft in The Netherlands.
Since joining Saudi Aramco in 1985, Kelamis has initiated several ground-breaking research programs, including multiple elimination for land data and near-surface characterization, while conducting original research.
He has mentored young Saudi Aramco professionals and was instrumental in establishing the company’s Specialist Development Program
Kelamis holds a bachelor-of-science degree with honors in physics from the University of Athens in Greece; a master-of-science degree in geophysics from Imperial College, London; and a Ph.D. in geophysics from the University of Alberta, Canada.
