Petroleum Engineering
Throughout its history, Saudi Aramco has engaged in massive projects to coax hydrocarbon
reserves from thousands of feet below desert sands or sea beds and to get these products
to consumers around the globe. With the continuing advancement of oil exploration
technologies we are able to grow reserves in known fields by delineating additional
oil and gas pockets as well as exploring new fields.
One of the most important tools in the petroleum engineering tool box
is reservoir stimulation, which
is used to calculate the number of wells to be drilled to develop a field, select well locations,
estimate facility requirements and develop and optimize reservoir management strategies.
Research in subsurface upstream activities is conducted by the Advanced Research Center of the
Company’s Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Center (EXPEX ARC). In the field of exploration
technology, the strategic goals are to increase reserves and improve recovery
rates.
At EXPEX ARC, petroleum engineers and geoscientists work closely together to
build highly sophisticated 3-D reservoir simulation computer programs. Within
the Event Solution Center multi-disciplinary teams focus on the solution of reservoir
production issues. Their work has significantly reduced completion time for studies,
compressed major decision cycles and reduced uncertainty.

Refinery
Meeting demand requires extensive, integrated manufacturing and transportation systems.
A Kingdom-wide network of refining, supply,
and distribution facilities, staffed by highly trained personnel,
maintains this continual supply of refined products.
Saudi Aramco's four domestic refineries at Riyadh, Ras Tanura, Yanbu’ and Jiddah have a combined capacity of nearly 1 million barrels per day. Adding the Company's two domestic joint-venture refineries, with ExxonMobil in Yanbu’ (SAMREF) and with Shell in Jubail (SASREF), and the Company's share of refining capacity at Petro Rabigh, brings in-Kingdom refining capacity to almost 1.5 million barrels per day.
- The most complex Saudi Aramco refinery is on the Arabian Gulf at Ras Tanura with a crude distillation capacity of 550,000 barrels per day. Most of Ras Tanura’s production is for domestic use and transferred to the Dhahran bulk plant, while some products are exported.
- Based on the Red Sea, the Yanbu’ Refinery is a hydro skimming facility with a design capacity of 230,000 barrels per day.
- The Jiddah refinery has a capacity of 80,000 barrels per day.
- Based in the Central Region of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh Refinery has a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day. This refinery is supplied with crude oil from the East-West pipeline.
Saudi Aramco is a worldwide pace-setter in acquiring and implementing state-of-the-art technology in the field of refining and distribution. Our strategy of integrating new technologies is not only benefiting operations and customer service, but also has a positive impact on the environment, energy consumption and the community.
In-house laboratories are developing innovative techniques to support refining and distribution operations . Chromatography techniques, developed by the Ras Tanura Laboratory, support terminal operations exports and rapidly identify the source of crude oil and other petroleum fractions.
Saudi Aramco’s broad network of bulk plants and air-fueling units is strategically located throughout the Kingdom and supplies thousands of bulk customers with products ranging from gasoline and jet fuel to fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gas. Added to this are gigantic tank farms that enable terminal exports of crude, natural gas liquids and refined products through the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea.

Marine
Saudi Aramco’s enormous storage tank farms and shipping terminals supply crude oil, NGL and refined products to customers around the globe. Every year, thousands of tankers call at company terminals in Ras Tanura and Ju’aymah on the Arabian Gulf and at Yanbu’, Jiddah and Rabigh on the Red Sea.
Ras Tanura’s offshore Sea Island Terminal is a complex of man-made islands, each featuring a loading station for crude oil, a bunker cargo and two berths. Six supertankers of up to 500,000 deadweight tons can load simultaneously. Highly trained harbor pilots are essential to the movement of tankers at all terminals. With the assistance of powerful tug boats and marine vessels, pilots direct and control the movement of tankers — from designated anchorage locations to assigned terminal berths.
Saudi Aramco is committed to the prevention of harmful hydrocarbon release in the air, land or waters of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco takes extensive preventive measures to minimize the risk of oil spills from the marine terminals and the tankers calling at them. Of primary concern is the protection of human life, public health and safety, protecting facilities, minimizing the disruption of safe operations at export terminals and critical production facilities and preserving the marine environment.
Vela International Marine Limited, Saudi Aramco’s wholly owned shipping subsidiary, is a leader in the maritime transportation industry and renowned for its safety and operational efficiency. Vela joined with the International Marine Organization (IMO) to support the “Global Industry Alliance”, a group dedicated to protecting marine environments and minimizing the marine industry’s environmental footprint.
