Petroleum Engineering

Throughout its history, Saudi Aramco has engaged in massive projects to coax hydrocarbon reserves from thousands of feet below desert sands or sea beds and to get these products to consumers around the globe.

Most oil-producing wells are free-flowing with a typical oil flow rate of 5,000 barrels per day. Once the oil is extracted, it is piped to a Gas Oil Separation Plant (GOSP) where water and the majority of dissolved gases are extracted. The remaining oil is then sent to a major stabilization facility, such as the Abqaiq Plants, for final gas separation and removal of hydrogen sulfide. The extracted gas is sent to Gas Operations facilities for additional processing, while the water is injected back into the ground. This dry (no water), sweet (no hydrogen sulfide) and stabilized (no gas) oil is delivered to Refining & Distribution to be refined or exported.
